What is it?

Loving Earth’s Rainbow Superfood Blend sustains your body to support the most demanding of lifestyles. Maqui & Acai are the ultimate purple antioxidant superfoods. Gubinge & Camu Camu are incredibly high sources of vitamin C; both are wholefoods, so your body will absorb them more effectively than synthetic supplements. Spirulina contains amino acids and Wheatgrass contains high levels of chlorophyll.

Spirulina

Spirulina is a blue green algae that is a single celled organism from the phylum Cyanobacteria. Spirulina was traditionally harvested as a food source by the Aztecs up until the 16th century.

Nowadays, spirulina is dried into a fine powder and added as a superfood to smoothies or cereal.

At Loving Earth, we have combined it into our Rainbow mix to create a balanced superfood blend.

Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass comes from the cotyledons (a portion of the embryo inside the seed) of the young grass from the common wheat plant, Triticum Aestivum. Typically, wheatgrass is sold and distributed in the format of a fine light green powder or is extracted into a juice.

The historical uses of wheatgrass originated in ancient Egypt over 5000 years ago, where the leaves of the young wheat plant were cultivated and consumed for their affects on health and vitality.

Thousands of years later, in 1930 wheatgrass became the subject of research conducted by Charles F Schnabel. And in 1940, Schnabel made the first powdered wheatgrass product available for sale in America.

Today, wheatgrass continues to be a highly nutritious wholefood when added to cereals, into smoothies or juices.

Health Benefits

Maqui

The benefits of the Maqui Berry are many and varied; read this report from Food Chemistry for the full details.

Our raw freeze-drying process retains maximum nutrients meaning that our Raw Organic Maqui Powder is a true wholefood supplement. With the highest antioxidant quantity of any fruit, Maqui is reported to stimulate weight loss, delays the ageing process and detoxifies and cleanses the body. Research is also showing that it's a powerful anti-inflammatory and contains high levels of polyphenols and anthocyanins.

Antioxidants are substances that delay the oxidation process, which is the natural deterioration of cells leading to ageing. A growing body of literature points to the importance of natural antioxidants from many plants, which may be used to reduce cellular oxidative damage, not only in foods, but also in the human body. This may provide protection against a wide range of chronic diseases. The ORAC test measures a food’s antioxidant ability to neutralise free radicals and potentially mitigate health imbalances. The USDA recommend up to 5,000 ORAC units per day and more if under any of the various stressors most of us face each day. Most individuals get only 1,200 ORAC units or less per day; using a wholefood supplement such as Maqui as part of a healthy balanced diet will ensure that you're getting enough antioxidants to reap the maximum benefit.

Anthocyanins are antioxidant flavonoids that protect many body systems and have some of the strongest physiological effects of any plant compounds. They're produced by plants for self-protection against sun, irradiation, diseases and biological enemies.

Laboratory research shows that anthocyanins:

Reduce the coagulation of blood platelets, inhibiting formation of blood clots involved in stroke, pulmonary embolism, peripheral vascular disease and heart attack. Promote higher levels of “good” cholesterol, HDL. Inhibit oxidation of “bad” cholesterol, LDL. Neutralize oxygen radicals. Down-regulate enzymes leading to inflammatory reactions that cause pain and stimulate other diseases.

Acai

Our Acai Powder is wildharvested from Acai palms growing in the coastal estuaries of the Tumaco region in Colombia, where they get mineralised by the Pacific Ocean. This along with the fact that the Acai pulp is NOT pasteurised before it is freeze dried results in an ORAC score of 182,146 uM trolox / 100g. This is nearly twice as much as Acai sourced from the Brazilian Amazon making it an extremely high source of antioxidants.

Camu Camu

Traditionally, native medicine practioners and herbalists have recommended Camu Camu for:

Strengthening the immune system Improving symptoms of herpes infections, including mouth blisters, genital blisters, shingles blisters and other viral infections Promoting energy and vitality of people with chronic immune dysfunction Strengthening the nervous system Supporting healthy levels of white blood cell formation Detoxifying the body, especially the liver Promoting health of upper respiratory organs, including lungs, sinuses, nasal passages Promoting a healthy heart and circulatory system It has the additional benefit of being non-irritating to sensitive stomachs and bladders.

Although the number of milligrams of Vitamin C, which Camu-Camu contains, is low compared to the milligrams in synthetically derived Vitamin C tablets, the effects on the human body are incomparable. Because of its food form, with bioflavanoids and other phytochemicals, clinical evidence suggests that it is far more effective, milligram for milligram, than synthetic Vitamin C (ascorbic acid).

Gubinge

Gubinge is a bush plum; there's a lot of hype around stuff coming out of the Amazon, Acai and so on, but Gubinge is a really powerful indigenous Australian superfood. It's the highest natural source of Vitamin C on the planet, and that's been verified. The species is called Terminalia Ferdinandiana, more popularly known as the Kakadu plum, and it grows in the Kakadu and the Kimberleys. The Kimberley version however has tested higher than the Kakadu version for Vitamin C. In the Kimberleys, where it is known as Gubinge, they're not irrigating it or cultivating it using typical commercial horticultural techniques, which a number of operations up in the Northern Territory are doing. Essentially, those precious vital phytonutrients (the antioxidants within plants) are there to make the plant itself stronger. They do the same for the plant as they do for us, so if you pamper the plant too much, it doesn't need them anymore! If that plant is in its natural environment and there's a certain level of environmental stress present, that makes the plant stronger, so you get these higher levels of antioxidants.

The Gubinge Powder that we produce and market under the Nyul Nyul brand is a raw whole food and in terms of the nutritional aspects, it's one of the only high Vitamin C products on the market that literally is a whole food. A whole food that just happens to have 13% Vitamin C. To make it we simply take the whole frozen fruit, dehydrate it at 40ºC for 16 hours and then mill it into a powder, so in essence all we have done is take away the water: everything else is there in the powder. The thing about it being a whole food is that nature packages these things in such a manner that they can easily be absorbed; Vitamin C is one important phytonutrient, but like most things, for that to be absorbed into the system, there are a couple of other things that the body really needs to be able to properly utilise it. Those other things are also important and carry out functions, but in our Western approach we tend to reduce things; there is in fact a whole, so in terms of a supplement it's amazing. It's packaged with everything; not only is it the highest natural source of Vitamin C, but it also includes everything else your body needs to assimilate the Vitamin C. All the synthetic Vitamin C supplements and extracts, they're going to be a lot cheaper in terms of milligram for milligram of Vitamin C. In terms of overall effectiveness however...they're incomparable. Two different worlds.

Spirulina

Spirulina contains a wide variety of minerals and vitamins. The iron content for a recommended daily serve of spirulina will provide over one third of the recommended daily intake.

Composed of 60% protein, it also boasts a complete protein profile which includes all 9 essential amino acids as well as non-essential amino acids.

It is rich in phytonutrients and plant pigments such as chlorophyll that may produce an alkalising affect in the body to aid the removal of toxins from the blood.

Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is highly regarded for its alkalising and antioxidant benefits and contains a range of minerals, enzymes as well as vitamin A, B1, B6.

In addition, the wheatgrass we have sourced is made up of 70% chlorophyll, and provides a complete protein profile of all the essential amino acids with the exception of Tryptophan.

Growing & Processing

Maqui

Maqui Berry Powder is obtained from freeze-drying and milling the frozen 100% pure Maqui berry fruit. The Maqui fruit is obtained from an indigenous Chilean plant known as the Maqui or Chilean Wineberry Tree (Aristotelia chilensis). The berries are then washed and frozen at a minimum of -35 degrees C, before being crushed, pureed and having their seeds removed. Finally, the fruit is freeze-dried and ground into powdered form.

Camu Camu

Dehydrated at below 40 degrees Celsius and milled into powder, our Camu Camu is pure 100% Certified Organic.

Gubinge

Our grower Bruno Dann is one of the stolen generation from the area north of Broome, near James Price Point, where they're planning on putting in the massive gas hub. He lived a fairly traumatic life, taken away from his mother at birth by missionaries. Back then it was law that Aboriginal women had to give birth in hospital, so that their babies could immediately be taken and given to missionaries. Bruno's mother ran away and actually gave birth to him in the wilderness, hence Bruno’s special connection with the land; on the weekends they'd let him go and spend time with the elders, but when he came back, if the missionaries found out that he'd been speaking his language or engaging with his culture, he was beaten. Yet they couldn't stop him: Bruno picked up enough traditional knowledge that together with his partner Marion, he was able to start reviving those traditional ways of taking care of the land. Gubinge grows up there in natural wild orchards, three or four trees together throughout the Bush. Each year the fire comes through and destroys everything, so what Bruno and his people began doing is back-burning, clearing the dead wood so that the fire's not coming through any more. They soon noticed that through these traditional ways of taking care of the land, the Gubinge trees started producing more fruit... Each year Bruno coordinates the harvest. The picking season goes from December through March. Depending on the weather, it can be as long as three months or as short as six weeks, and there are designated spots where people can pick from. Most of the harvesters are from Bruno's language group and the surrounding areas and people get paid by the kilo, so come Gubinge season, everyone gets out on the land and picks it. It's a really good project because it's a high-value product and it's something that's growing wildly, so there's a fair bit of it around and it's sustainable. The other thing that Bruno is doing is working with people to show them how to care for the land throughout the rest of the year. People see what Bruno's achieved and then they say alright, we're going to do that as well. It's not just about the Gubinge: it's about the whole environment. If you're taking care of the land, the Gubinge will thrive...but so will everything else. Gubinge is their asset, it's the thing that they've got up there. It's something that's benign, that's sustainable and supports the environment. The other main industry up there is mining, which is unsustainable and which destroys the environment. It took us at Loving Earth a couple of years to really get the project going, since we needed to develop the infrastructure and figure out how we were going to process the fruit. Scott stayed in touch with Bruno, and when we finally got our commercial dehydrator and found a special grinding machine from India, we were in business. That was a couple of years after the initial contact, during which time we'd been working on the post-harvest infrastructure to collect, clean and pack the fruit into frozen storage. With everything in place to really get stuck into the project, Scott returned for harvest season two years after first contact...the difference was amazing. The traditional harvesting techniques were paying massive dividends, and the quality was incredible. We got the frozen fruit down here to Melbourne and figured out how to process it into a powder. We did some trials, got some tests done and found out that we were getting really high levels of Vitamin C. That's when we began commercialising it. We got our graphic designer to come up with a logo, Nyul Nuyl, which is the language group for Bruno's people, and this is the brand we have created for the community up there.

Wheatgrass

The process begins with the harvesting of the young wheatgrass plant. The wheatgrass is then purified using activated oxygen (ozone) before it is rinsed with water to remove any remaining residue. The wheatgrass is then dried before it is finally milled into a fine powder at below 0 degrees Celsius to minimize enzyme degradation. Our certified organic wheatgrass is manufactured under tightly controlled processes to ensure that the final product is at its highest quality to maintain all the nutritional benefits.

Spirulina

At Loving Earth, we have sourced the highest quality organic certified spirulina for our Rainbow Superfood Blend. The spirulina we use has been grown at approximately 25 degrees Celsius and a pH of 9.5 from ponds, which are operated in carefully controlled environments. As spirulina has a tendency to absorb nutrients for its medium, these ponds are all tightly monitored to ensure the absence of synthetic, artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers. Some of these ponds are open-air ponds, situated in isolated locations, away from any residential or industrial sites. In growing sites where the ponds may be more exposed to variable weather conditions, greenhouses are fitted over the ponds for protection. For Spirulina, these optimal growing conditions are integral to maintain its quality and benefits.
